Mr. Montgomery was indicted in July by the Manhattan district attorney’s office, accused of a scheme to funnel campaign contributions to the mayor and to conceal the source of donations. In his plea Monday, Mr. Montgomery, 64, agreed not to organize or host any fund-raisers or solicit contributions for a campaign for one year. In return, the district attorney, Alvin L. Bragg, said that he would recommend that Mr. Montgomery complete 200 hours of community service and pay a $500 fine. The mayor was not implicated in the indictment and has not been accused of any wrongdoing. When the charges became public, his campaign spokesman, Evan Thies, thanked Mr. Bragg’s prosecutors for “their hard work on behalf of taxpayers.”

Why Maui’s rebuilding effort will be so expensive

All told, doing business in Hawaii is about 30% more expensive than the cost of doing business in the rest of the United States, according to Moody Analytics. “Based on similar historical events, this is likely conservative, as building delays and supply and demand cause additional pressures on reconstruction costs,” said Verisk. Construction permitting generally takes longer in Hawaii than most mainland locations, said Jessica Leorna, CEO of the state’s Building Industry Association. That’s especially true for construction workers, who were in short supply even before the fires, according to the state’s Building Industry Association. And workers from elsewhere in the state or the Southeast could drive home on weekends,” he said.

“This is a room full of people who truly believe in the ability to go up against Adams and win,” said Cristina González, one of the hosts, on Thursday, after word of the meeting leaked. Mr. Adams will likely be a heavy favorite to capture a second term. He remains broadly popular with the coalition of Black and Latino voters outside of Manhattan who sent him to Gracie Mansion. Evan Thies, a spokesman for the Adams campaign, said in a statement that the mayor had lowered crime and “invested billions of dollars in working people” and that polls showed he had strong support from New Yorkers. “The fact that these folks would rather play politics in some back room two years before the election, instead of help the mayor help working people, tells you all you need to know about what they really care about: their own power,” he said.

New York City’s complex campaign finance law sits at the heart of the events sketched out in the court papers. The defendants are accused of trying to mask large donations by funneling them through straw donors. On Friday, Evan Thies, a spokesman for the 2021 Adams campaign, thanked prosecutors for “their hard work on behalf of taxpayers.”“The campaign always held itself to the highest standards and we would never tolerate these actions,” Mr. Thies said. The second took place after Mr. Adams had won his primary, effectively ensuring his election as mayor of the heavily Democratic city. For each fund-raiser, according to prosecutors, the defendants recruited straw donors and then reimbursed them.

REUTERS/Ngouda DioneTHIES, Senegal, June 14 (Reuters) - In a dusty alleyway in the Senegalese city of Thies, Japanese wrestler Shogo Uozumi lay face-down in the sand after being tossed in the air by an oversized opponent. Uozumi then rose to his feet, dusted himself off and rejoined the surrounding group of wrestlers wearing loincloths. Anchored in ancestral war rituals, Laamb has evolved from a post-harvest pastime into Senegal's national sport. Since relocating to Senegal full-time in 2022, Uozumi has lived with a community of wrestlers in Thies, Senegal's third largest city.

The fight is similar to others being waged across the country, as cities weigh the best approach to address crime, homelessness and poverty. In Chicago, Brandon Johnson, the progressive Democratic candidate for mayor, won this month on a public safety message that went beyond policing, and focused on youth employment programs and mental health services. Mr. Adams and his top political adviser, Evan Thies, each discounted the notion that the mayoral election in Chicago was a sign that Democratic values had shifted to the left, and that New York may follow suit. When Lori Lightfoot, the outgoing mayor of Chicago, lost in the first round of voting last month, Mr. Adams said he did not view her loss as a warning sign for himself. “Both Mayor Adams and Mayor-elect Johnson ran campaigns that prioritized safety and justice, and were supported by large Black electorates,” Mr. Thies said in a statement.
Big cat cubs rescued from Ukraine reach Poland
  + stars: | 2022-10-27 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
WARSAW, Oct 27 (Reuters) - Four lion cubs and a black leopard cub from war-torn Ukraine have found safety in a Polish zoo, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) said, after surviving drone attacks and bombing in the first few months of their lives. The cubs were transferred to animal rescue organisations in Kyiv and Odessa after a crackdown on the exotic pet trade in Ukraine, and are now in Poznan zoo in western Poland awaiting onward travel. IFAW said it had partnered with a sanctuary in the United States and one in Europe to care for the cubs, who were bred in captivity and cannot be released into the wild. The Wildcat Sanctuary (TWS) in the United States will take care of the lion cubs.
